The 630-foot long Broad Canal Walkway, which runs along the edge of the Broad Canal, has opened, according to Twining Properties and Mirant Kendall.
The walkway, which once extended far into Kendall Square linking factories to the Charles River and the Boston Harbor, sits on piles above the water.
The Broad Canal Walkway starts at the Mirant Kendall Cogeneration Station on First Street across from the Charles River. Heading west along the walkway visitors pass the cogeneration station and Genzyme’s headquarters to the north. Finally at its western terminus the walkway connects with Broad Canal Street, where a new Cambridge landing will offer visitors a place to launch canoes, kayaks and small craft to explore the canal and the river beyond.
This Cambridge landing is part of a new public park and plaza now under construction by Twining Properties next to its Watermark apartment tower and a planned hotel. The new landing and park are to be completed later this summer.
